The penis is a collection of cylinders housed inside a soft tissue body. The make up of this organ is such that allows it to remain at rest in complete comfort and then become erect as it is necessary. The actual penis is not made up of any bones or cartilage nor does it contain muscle mass itself.

The first two chambers are a matched set. These are referred to as the corpora cavernosa and they are the primary areas of anatomy for the penis to become erect. They have a set of small holes that allow for the two chambers to work in conjunction with one another when the blood starts to flow for the erection.

As the chambers go further into the body they are split into two parts and then they are anchored to the pubic bone with a thick tissue that is close related to muscle. The entire inner structure of the penis is also covered with a thick membrane that allows the erection to take place and maintain rigidity.

The third cylinder of the penis is known as the corpus spongiosum and it contains the urethra. The urethra is what is responsible for carrying the semen and sperm out of the penis during ejaculation. This is a cylinder that is actually rather slim in nature but forms a bulb when it gets closer to the body.

The rest of the penis is covered in a thinner layer of tissue that is still rather tough. This goes clear into the body and abdominal wall. At this point the penis is attached to the pubic bone with a ligament. This ligament is often times clipped to allow the lower hanging of the penis that will give it the appearance of being longer.
